The 20th Anniversary edition of New Zealand’s most influential annual wine publication Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide to New Zealand Wines applauds Marlborough as the country’s leading wine region, home to both his 2012 top-pick ‘Best Wine Buys.’
This coveted citation has been given to Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2011 selected by Michael Cooper from over 2000 eligible white wines as his recommended ’Best White Wine Buy of the Year’.
‘This latest accolade is particularly gratifyng as it recognises Whitehaven’s commitment to creating exceptional quality, accessible wines that express true Marlborough terroir,’ said Managing Director, Sue White.
‘Customer loyalty and brand recognition are vitally important to family companies like Whitehaven, and arguably the best way to achieve both is to endeavour always to exceed expectations.’
Undoubtedly, Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2011 appeals to Michael Cooper, who rates it 5-Stars and writes –
‘From one vintage to the next, Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc is classy, with rich passionfruit/lime flavours, very fresh, pure and well-rounded. The 2011 vintage of this multiple Gold Medal and Trophy-winning label is right on form – and you can buy a bottle for less than $20.
‘Whitehaven Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011 is a classic regional style – mouth-filling, punchy and dry, with crisp, ripe tropical-fruit flavours to the fore, a herbal undercurrent, and lovely poise, delicacy and length. Already very open and expressive, it’s the sort of Sauvignon Blanc that draws you back for a second glass…and a third.’
Company founder, Sue White, attributes the wine’s quality to the fact that Whitehaven sources grapes from over 30 carefully managed vineyards across various sites in the Marlborough region encompassing the Wairau and Awatere Valleys.
‘Our winemaker Sam Smail has a knack of drawing the very best from these individual grape parcels, to create expressive, finely balanced wines, and this new release from another fabulous season is no exception.’
Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2011 also recently won a Gold Medal at the 2011 International Aromatic Wine Competition and Top 100 Blue-Gold at the Sydney International Wine Competition. The predecessor 2010 Sauvignon Blanc was declared Champion Sauvignon Blanc at the 2011 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards.
Whitehaven is a Renwick-based winery with a growing reputation both in New Zealand and abroad. Export markets include the USA, Australia, UK, Canada, Ireland, Germany, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
